Cyprus Tide Gauge Network "PYTHEAS" Joins IOC Global Monitoring Efforts

Added on 2025-12-03 08:44:27 by Kokosis, Georgios
The Department of Lands and Surveys (DLS) of Cyprus has successfully incorporated its national tide gauge network, "PYTHEAS," into the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's (IOC) international observation system. This integration significantly boosts global sea-level monitoring and disaster preparedness efforts.
The DLS originally established the PYTHEAS network along the Cyprus coastline in 2018. It comprises four stations, each equipped with radar tide gauges, meteorological stations, water temperature sensors, and GPS receivers. The network's initial primary purpose was to monitor local sea levels and assist the DLS in establishing a precise Vertical Reference System for national hydrographic needs.
The recent incorporation of these four DLS-managed stations into the IOC network enhances regional data coverage in the Eastern Mediterranean. The real-time data provided by the DLS network is crucial for systems like the Tsunami Early Warning System in the North-Eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas (NEAMTWS), aiding in the timely detection and forecasting of potential marine hazards.
This successful integration highlights the DLS's commitment to transforming a vital national asset into a critical component of a global scientific effort, reinforcing Cyprus's significant contribution to international maritime safety.
